Description
This tour highlights a number of historic homes in the North Slope Historic District. The route tours the heart of the district and introduces you to a variety of architectural styles and their architects. The tour mostly follows a square loop, returning you to the starting point. The tour begins on North J Street between North 9th and North 10th, with the home located at 911 North J Street. This residential neighborhood of 228 acres contains 1,285 homes, making it one of the state’s largest historic districts and one of the largest west of the Mississippi. Tacoma's North Slope neighborhood was settled primarily as a residential streetcar suburb. Intended as a self-guided walking tour, it was adapted and informed by a booklet Historic Tacoma published in 2008. The publication was funded by Historic Tacoma, the North End Neighborhood Council, and the North Slope Historic District, with research by Brian Kamens, Marshall McClintock, Kim O’Rourke, and Caroline Swope of Historic Tacoma.
