In early 1983, the University of Alabama in Huntsville was running out of space to accommodate the activities of the College of Engineering. Many qualified prospective students were being turned away from the college, due to inadequate space. The Engineering Building solved this problem. By February 1983, funding had been secured for construction. The Jones and Herrin architectural firm was commissioned to build it, for a total of $4.5 million, $3.8 million of which was used for the construction itself, with the further $.7 million for other fees and furniture. The building had "about 40,000 square feet of classroom, laboratory and office space"[1] and a parking lot that could hold 400 vehicles.

On the 5th of October,1983, ground was broken for the building, but it took about a year to complete. Gentrac Inc. of Decatur, Alabama, constructed the building, which was completed late summer 1984. Classes were held in the building that September.

Within the building you will find the College of Engineering offices as well as offices related to Chemical and Materials Engineering. Located adjacent to the Von Braun Research Hall and the lagoon dug nearby, it sits in the midst of the UAH South campus.
