The Discovery Center of Idaho has been a staple for children and adults alike since the early 1990s, and it currently ranks as one of the top interactive museums in the entire state. Located on the northern edge of Julia Davis Park in Boise, within walking distance of Zoo Boise and the Idaho Black History Museum, the Discovery Center of Idaho introduces visitors of all ages to over 200 exhibits and scientific experiments. In essence, the mission of the Discovery Center is to put scientific phenomena into the hands of ordinary people, who can thereafter learn from the hands-on experience. Though the exhibits, two daily live science shows, and a miscellany of events held throughout the year, the Discovery Center hopes to influence a lifelong curiosity in science, technology, engineering, and math. For these reasons and many others, the Discovery Center of Idaho was ranked in Conde Nast Traveler’s 10 Best U.S. Museums for Kids (and Kids at Heart).

2. Idaho Black History Museum

Founded in 1995, The Idaho Black History Museum provides opportunities for educational enrichment and promotes the study of the contributions of Blacks in history. The museum serves as a venue for the exploration of the rich legacy of African Americans and diverse Black cultures in Idaho and across the world through exhibits, programs, and events

3. Thomas E. Logan House in Pioneer Village

One of the historic structures in the northwest corner of Julia Davis Park, east of the Idaho State Museum building, is Boise's oldest surviving mud brick building, the Thomas E. Logan House. Logan was Boise City's first postmaster in the late 1860s and was elected Mayor four times in the 1870s. The adobe house was constructed in 1865 and bought by Logan in 1868. It was moved to this spot from Sixth St. near Main in 1970 to save it. The Thomas E. Logan House stayed in the family until 1914 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The Logan House is next to the Lewis and Clark Discovery Pavilion (a covered shelter) and two more buildings moved here: the 1863 Coston log cabin and the small frame Adelmann House, forming Pioneer Village.

4. Idaho State Museum

Located in Boise, the Idaho State Museum is the state's official museum. Operated by the Idaho State Historical Society, the museum has a comprehensive collection of over 250,000 objects, which includes one of the country's largest collection of historical arms and military memorabilia. In addition to preserving and displaying items from its large collection, the museum hosts events and offers special traveling exhibitions and educational programs for schools. Over 30,000 people visit the museum each year. It has been closed for renovation and is expected to reopen in the summer of 2018.

5. Boise Art Museum

Boise Art Museum (BAM) is one several of museums and cultural attractions in Julia Davis Park. It holds a collection of modern and contemporary works and offers changing exhibitions throughout the year. It also offers various educational programming for people of all ages such as classes and workshops.

6. Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial

Built in 2002, The Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial is an outdoor educational park inspired by Anne Frank's faith in humanity. It is located on the grounds of The Wassmuth Center for Human Rights (formerly known as The Idaho Human Rights Education Center). It is the only Anne Frank Memorial in the United States and one of the only places in the world where the full Universal Declaration of Human Rights is on public display. The Memorial also includes a life-sized bronze statue of Anne Frank, a tribute to the late Idaho Senator Frank Church, and over 60 quotes from the world's humanitarian leaders including Dr. King, Robert Kennedy, Maya Angelou, and more.

7. Idaho Candy Company Factory

Creator of the chocolate bar shaped like a potato and marketed as "the Idaho Spud," The Idaho Candy Company has been in business in a factory at 412 S. Eighth St. in Boise since 1909. The Idaho Candy Company is the only business within the National Register-listed South Eighth Street Historic District (1977) that still operates in its historic location. Most of the rest of the former buildings in the district - that once contained a creamery, a seed warehouse, an ice/produce shop. and many other businesses - have been converted into offices, stores, and restaurants. The company store at this location is open to the public on weekdays.

Description

Start in Julia Davis Park at the Discovery Center of Idaho and walk or bike to some of Boise's best museums and a display of some of its oldest houses, just down the road in the park. Then walk a short distance west to a human rights memorial. End by walking a few blocks north to the Idaho Candy Company Factory, where century-old machines still turn out candy bars. Their candy shop is open on weekdays.
