Croatian immigration to the United States began 1900 and accelerated after World War I. Many of those coming to Eagle River moved from another location in The United States. They were attracted by advertisement for farm land, which was in reality cutover logging land with few or no improvements. They invested life savings and met with fields of stumps and sandy soil. This is a story of survival and determination.
Eagle River Stadium is a historic indoor hockey stadium in Eagle River, Wisconsin; the building also houses the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame. It was built in 1933 and was the first indoor hockey stadium constructed in the state. For many years boxing fights were also held there (the floor was dirt at the time). The stadium is the home area for the local high school team, the Eagle River Recreation Association Youth Hockey Association, and a semi-pro hockey team, the Eagle River Falcons. Given its importance in hockey in the state, the stadium was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad built the first depot in Eagle River in 1883, one year after the tracks were laid and the first trains roared into town. As with all small towns, the arrival of the railways was a catalyst to growth. The trains were also a link between the logging era in the Northwoods and what would follow; settlement and later the growth of the tourism era.
