Description

The route follows the recently expanded Kansas City streetcar loop from the River Market to UMKC. This interactive tour makes it possible to sit and read or listen to the histories of over forty landmarks that are viewable from the streetcar route. Kansas City's streetcar history dates back to 1869 when the first mule-drawn carts operated. Within a short period, Kansas City was home to the third-largest cable car system in the United States in terms of track mileage. The metro area was later home to one of the largest streetcar systems, with tracks that connected the downtowns of KCK and KCMO with suburban neighborhoods in five counties. The network also connected to several interurban railroads that reached St. Joseph, Lawrence, and other surrounding communities. In 1957, the city commemorated the last run of its streetcars, but increased interest in public transportation led to the creation of this streetcar line in 2016. This interpretive trail along the streetcar line was built in anticipation of the spring 2025 expansion, extending the line south from Union Station to the UMKC campus.
