The YWCA building

The YWCA building
Fresno's YWCA building was built in 1922. The building was designed by Julia Morgan, the first licensed female architect in California and the architect behind the Hearst Castle and several of the buildings on UC Berkeley's campus. Morgan was the official YWCA architect for the West Coast and designed two other buildings for the organization in Fresno.

A number of the YWCA projects that Morgan built had Phoebe Hearst as a benefactor. It was Hearst who gave Morgan her first commission on the Berkeley campus. The YWCA provided young women with housing, job training, and opportunities for recreation; as a woman in field overwhelmingly dominated by men and who lived for a number of years in a dormitory, it was an organization which had obvious appeal for Morgan.

In addition to the building in Fresno, Morgan also built YWCA buildings in Hollywood, San Francisco, Pasadena, Salt Lake City, and Honolulu. The building on M Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
