The Daisy Flour Mill was built in 1840 and is the only flour mill still standing on Irondequoit Creek. It is now Gatherings Catering Company, which holds banquets for weddings, anniversaries, parties, and other events. Little other information appears to be available about the building.

This is a tour of some of my favorite places in Rochester, NY. As a new residents, it's important for me to get to know my community by visiting significant places and learning how they contribute to the city. Rochester has a rich history of blending sophisticated culture with industry, which is reflected here.

Susan B. Anthony was born into a Quaker household in 1820. Like many other Quakers, Anthony's parents&nbsp;advocated&nbsp;liberal reforms such as the end of slavery and greater freedoms for women. After graduation, Anthony taught for fifteen years before she became active in the&nbsp;burgeoning women's&nbsp;movement. From there, she dedicated her life to greater rights for women, something she believed could be best advanced by securing equal&nbsp;suffrage.&nbsp;In 1849,&nbsp;Anthony&nbsp;moved to Rochester and became involved in several reform movements related to greater rights for women and the end of slavery. Like a number of other women in this part of the country, Anthony traveled throughout New York attending and organizing abolitionist meetings.When the 14th and 15th Amendments&nbsp;extended&nbsp;suffrage to&nbsp;African American males but&nbsp;explicitly limited suffrage to men, Anthony and other feminists formed the Equal Rights Association. Anthony teamed up with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and together they formed a powerful partnership. During these years, this house served as&nbsp;the movement's&nbsp;organizational headquarters, with many meetings occurring at the home. Along with her dedication to women's suffrage, she also campaigned for the abolition of slavery. Anthony also supported&nbsp;equal educational opportunities for all regardless of race and gender. In an era when there were few&nbsp;college programs that were open to women, Anthony and others called for the creation and improvement of women's colleges as well as&nbsp;an end to exclusionary policies. In 1859, for example, Anthony spoke before the state teachers' convention at Troy and at the Massachusetts teachers' convention. At both of these meetings,&nbsp;she&nbsp;denied any&nbsp;differences between the intellectual capacities of&nbsp;men and women.Anthony's family was also active in the anti-slavery movement and her church would occasionally meet at her family's Quaker farm with Frederick Douglass.

Located in the former home of the famous women's right's activist the museum is named after, the National Susan B. Anthony Museum offers exhibits that interpret the history of women's suffrage and the life and influence of Susan B. Anthony. One of the most influential Americans of the late 19th century, Anthony challenged the assumption that men and women should occupy different classes of citizenship. She was arrested for voting in 1872 and used the event to publicize the lack of political rights for women. Anthony worked with other suffragists such as close friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton and created the National Woman Suffrage Association. The museum has a variety of artifacts related to this organization, as well as a collection of documents for researchers.

A daughter of Western Union founder Hiram Sibley, Emily Sibley Watson established the Memorial Art Gallery in 1913 as a memorial to her late son James Averell- an aspiring architect who died at the age of 26 in 1904 after contracting typhoid fever. The gallery was donated to and held in trust by the University of Rochester, making it one of only a few public arts centers in the United States affiliated with an university. Constructed over the course of three years, the Memorial Art Gallery finally opened to the public on the afternoon of October 8, 1913. George L. Herdle, a local painter and president of the Rochester Art Club, was appointed as the gallery's first director. Initially, the art collection actually owned by the gallery itself was quite small- only consisting of about five paintings and a handful of other exhibits. During the early years of the gallery, attendance was driven by a full schedule of exhibitions organized by Herdle. In 1914, the gallery hosted one of the first unveilings of Kodachrome's original two-color photograph development process. Then, in 1919, the Memorial Art Gallery became the center of local controversy after an exhibition of World War I paintings by realist painter George Bellows offended some members of the community. Rochester Mayor James G. Cutler wrote to Rush Rhees, president of the University of Rochester, demanding that the exhibition be removed. Rhees refused and the exhibition continued as planned. After the death of George Herdle in 1922, his daughter Gertrude Herdle Moore took over his position as gallery director. In doing so, Moore became the youngest museum director in the United States at the age of 25. One of the first women to receive a Masters degree from the University of Rochester, Moore also became one of only three female members of the Association of Art Museum Directors at the time. Under Moore's leadership, the Memorial Art Gallery was able to require substantial acquisition endowments and therefore expand their collection to the roughly 12,000 items that reside in the gallery today. Among these are ancient Egyptian and Mediterranean artifacts dating back 5,000 years, and paintings from artists such as Georgia O'Keefe, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, and Rembrandt. It also houses the only full-size Italian Baroque organ in North America- a permanent loan item gifted by the Eastman School of Music. In 1926, the gallery's floor space doubled in size with the construction of a children's wing, an auditorium, and the fountain court. It doubled again in size with an expansion completed in 1968. The Memorial Art Gallery's last expansion- a 12,000 square-foot pavilion entrance- occurred in 1986. Then in 2011, ten acres of the property on which the gallery sits was transformed into the Centennial Sculpture Park- a community park space filled with urban art. Today, the Memorial Art Gallery offers educational tours and workshops for children and adult visitors. The Gallery also hosts the annual Clothesline Festival, an outdoors art exhibition and live entertainment festival in which Rochester residents can purchase original pieces from New York artists.

The Memorial Art Gallery was founded in 1913 by Emily Sibley Watson, the daughter of industrialist Hiram Sibley. Watson was fond of the arts and decided to establish the museum in honor of her son and architect James Averell, who died suddenly in 1904 at the age of 26 from typhoid fever. Today, the museum contains 12,000 works of art that span 5,000 years- from ancient Egyptian relics to modern works. In addition to its permanent collection, the Memorial Art Gallery also hosts traveling exhibits, lectures, concerts, an annual arts and crafts festival, among many other events. Held in trust by the University of Rochester, the gallery is one of the few university-affiliated art museums that also serves as a community art center.

Memorial Art Gallery

In 1925, a movement entitled the Little Cinema Movement began in Rochester, New York, to provide moviegoers with alternatives to big-time commercial cinema theaters of the time. The Little Theatre was the fifth theatre to be built in support of the Movement, and was open to the public on October 17th, 1929 and designed in an Art Deco style, fitting of the Little Cinema Movement. The Little originally was a proponent exclusively of silent films; this, however, proved problematic, as this coincided with both the Great Depression and the quickly spreading popularity of talkies. As a response to this, the Little began showing foreign films in 1931, as well as non-foreign films that they deemed of cultural value. Despite this commitment to their own unique brand of cinema, however, the Little Theatre began to have difficulty acquiring foreign films, and as other art houses abandoned foreign films altogether, the Little fell on hard times for the following decades. By 1967, the Little Theatre had been sold to a movie chain called Jo-Mor, and was owned by them for fifteen years. A renovation to completely redo its outside appearance was considered by the Jo-Mor chain, and in response to this, it was bought in 1982 in order to restore it to its 1930s glory. By 1993, the Little Theatre had expanded to hold five screens, vastly improving their potential for programming. During its renovations, the Little Theatre also had a café, a store, and a number of other amenities added in the following years. By its 85th year, the Little Theatre had made the transition from film reel to digital, allowing it to comply with film industry standards. Today, the Little Theatre continues to provide Rochester with an alternative to mainstream cinema.

The Little Theatre, also known simply as the Little, is a movie theatre based in Rochester, New York, specializing in airing lesser-played films. Opened in 1929, the Little Theatre was built as part of a movement to give viewers an alternative to large chain theatres, showing art films, documentaries, and other non-mainstream films. Today, the Little continues to provide the residents of Rochester with an alternative to mainstream cinema, as well as serving as a concert venue for local artists.

The Little Theatre

The Rochester Museum &amp; Science Center was originally founded by a city ordinance in 1912 as the Rochester Municipal Museum- a museum "dedicated to providing a permanent repository” for local "relics". Edward D. Putnam was appointed as the museum's first curator the following year. He served in this position until his retirement in 1924. Overall management of the museum fell under the purview of the Public Library Board until 1925, when the Rochester Municipal Museum became its own City Department complete with commissioners. Following the retirement of the museum's former curator in 1924, Dr. Arthur C. Parker- an archaeologist and expert on Native American history- took the position as museum director later that year. The leadership of Parker, who conceptualized museums as the "university of the common man", was extremely influential in cementing the museum's future. Parker, who was part-Native American himself, was passionate about creating a museum that regularly interacted with historical societies and organizations- particularly ones that had to do with Native American history and culture. In 1935, Dr. Parker acquired funding from the Works Progress Administration- a New Deal Program- to launch the Indian Arts Project, which lasted until 1941. The project employed members of the Tonawanda and Cattaraugus Reservations to create artistic representations of their daily lives. These art pieces are still held in the museum's collection today. Parker also oversaw the construction of Bausch Hall for the museum, and grew the general collection until his retirement in 1945, a decade before his death. Thanks to Parker's work, the museum's name was changed to the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences in 1930 in order to reflect the growing scope of the exhibits being displayed there. The position of museum director was filled in 1945 by Parker's successor, W. Stephen Thomas. Thomas worked tirelessly to expand the Museum's collection even further. In 1968, after the opening of the Strasenburgh Planetarium, the museum's name was again changed to its current title- the Rochester Museum &amp; Science Center. The same year, the City of Rochester handed over operations completely to the museum's Board of Trustees and the museum was established as a private, non-profit educational institution. The Rochester Museum &amp; Science Center grew substantially during the late 20th century. In 1978, the 400-seat Eisenhart Auditorium was opened to the public. Two years later, the adjacent Columbia School for Girls was purchased by the museum, renovated, and then reopened as the Gannett School building. The largest project, however- the 900 acre Cumming Nature Center located near Naples, forty miles away- was completed in 1982. Established to promote environmental education, the Cumming Nature Center offers 6 miles of trails as well as an interactive visitors center. Today, the Rochester Museum &amp; Science Center contains a total of 1.2 million items, ranging from local history to ancient artifacts and mastodon skeletons. The museum's 60,000 square-feet of interactive exhibits include a submarine ride simulator, rock climbing walls, and giant-screen films about space in the Strasenburgh Planetarium.

Founded in 1912, the Rochester Museum and Science Center is a natural history and science museum in Rochester, New York. It consists of the main museum building, a planetarium just next door, and the Cumming Nature Center, which is located in Naples. The museum features 200 exhibits, covering a wide range of subject matter in the natural science, science and technology, and aerospace fields. It contains 1.2 million items and tens of thousands of documents and photographs in its archives. Much of this material can be accessed online. The nature center is located on a 900-acre property and visitors can participate in various educational programs, including summer camps, or hike on one of the property's six hiking trails. 

Rochester Museum and Science Center

George Eastman (1854-1932) was an entrepreneur known for his contributions and advancements in the field of photography. Eastman resided in his Colonial Revival home in Rochester from the time of its completion in 1905 until his death. In addition to the construction of his estate, Eastman also transformed the 8.5 acres of farmland he bought in 1902. Landscape architect Stephen DeForest, designed the landscape with gardens of all varieties, both formal and informal. The most formal garden is the Terrace Garden, with contains over ninety different perennials and annuals.The Terrace Garden was the most used and photographed garden due to its easy access from the living room, dining room, and conservatory. In addition, Eastman hosted guests and business receptions at the Terrace Garden. In 1916, after purchasing nearby property to the west, Eastman added even more gardens with the help of architect Claude Bragdon.George Eastman passed away in 1932 and bequeathed the home to the University of Rochester and became the president's residence (Eastman was a good friend of the president at that time). Ten years later a board of trustees took over the house and started the process of converting the house to a museum, which came to fruition in 1949. The archive building was completed in 1989 and the house was renovated in early 1990.

One of the oldest and largest film and photograph conservation institutions in the world, the George Eastman Museum is located in the Colonial Revival mansion built by East Kodak Company founder, George Eastman in 1905. The museum opened in 1949 with the purpose of preserving films and photographs. The collection is enormous- featuring 400,000 photographs and negatives, 28,000 films, four million films, and thousands of publications. Highlights include Civil War photographs by Alexander Gardner, early Ansel Adams prints, works by French photographers, and daguerreotypes. The museum holds changing exhibits throughout the year. The house itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a National Historic Landmark.

George Eastman Museum

One of the first several medical societies in the city at the time, the Rochester Academy of Medicine was founded on June 26, 1899 with its first meeting between 23 doctors from the Rochester area. As it grew over the early 1900's, members held meetings at various different spots until a building on Prince Street was acquired in 1923. A much larger residence on East Avenue- built in 1908 and formerly owned by Rochester philanthropists Carolyn and Edmund Lyons- was donated to the Rochester Academy of Medicine in 1939. Years later in 1947, an early version of the Rochester Medical Museum &amp; Archives was established in a cramped room in the Rochester General Hospital. Initially, the collection consisted simply of boxes full of medical records, photographs, documents, and letters from the hospitals of the Rochester General Health System- some dating back to 1847. When its collection began outgrowing the space, the Archives were moved to the former Stromberg-Carlson factory building on Humboldt Street. In April of 2014, the Rochester Academy of Medicine then invited the Museum &amp; Archives to set up permanent residence at their building location on East Street- an offer which the Museum accepted. Today, the Rochester Medical Museum &amp; Archives are located on the 5,000 square-foot second floor of the Rochester Academy of Medicine building. Museum exhibits tell 1,000 years of medical and health-related history in the Rochester region with a variety of interactive activities, temporary exhibitions, and artifact displays. Most of the museum's oral histories and archival documents- all collected from roughly twenty former and current medical institutions in Rochester- are housed in a building previously used as a library by the Academy of Medicine.

Founded in a small room of the Rochester General Hospital in 1947, the Rochester Medical Museum & Archives is now located on the second floor of the Rochester Academy of Medicine building, where it has operated since 2014. It offers a number of permanent exhibits as well as traveling exhibits and items on loan from other museums and various educational institutions. The permanent collection consists of items from twenty medical and research facilities in the area. Visitors can also view temporary thematic exhibits featuring photographs, artwork, and historical vignettes. The heart of the museum is its research library, which is home to the archives of Rochester General Hospital and many other medical institutions throughout New York.
