Description

Ferdinand Lindheimer was on of New Braunfels’ most notable citizens and is recognized as the “Father of Texas Botany.” Lindheimer discovered several hundred plant species and has forty-one plants, and a few animals, named for him, such as the Prickly Pear Cactus and the Texas Rat Snake. Lindheimer also served as a guide for the German settlers and was paid in land on the Comal River, where his house still stands. In 1852, he was unanimously elected as the first editor of the Neu Braunfelser Zeitung newspaper, which he published for 20 years.
