English/Spanish. Going in the Our Lady Guadalupe church, one can feel a sense of amazement at how beautiful and prodigious it looks. This beautiful church in the middle of a small Newton neighborhood resembles many other Our Lady of Guadalupe churches in Kansas such as their beautiful and highly detailed designs of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the community-oriented programs and welcoming presence. Occasionally, behind the church one can find the Guadalupe Park with a taco truck that opens and serves the community.

Beginning in the 20th century, Latinos immigrated and settled in what is now known as Newton, Kansas. For many years, the Santa Fe Railroad has been the major source of income for the Mexican-American population in Kansas. Following the Santa Fe Railroad, many Mexican American families settled in Newton although times were tough and work was scarce. Latinos have been able to strive for better quality of life. Many Mexican-Amercian and recent immigrants have called Newton their home and important worthwhile citizens in the United States. Finally, Mexican-Amercians in Newton have contributed to the development of Kansas, and they will continue to play an important role in the future development of the United States.

Los trabajadores mexicanos eran indispensables para el crecimiento de la ciudad. English/Spanish. Frozen in time between West 1st and Diagonal Street one can witness the trains that brought several Mexican immigrant workers to the area of Newton, Kansas. In this intersection, one can see some remaining trains and train tracks that used to carry goods to the rest of the city. Mexican workers were indispensable for the growth of the town. Although, the train tracks are not used in the same way, it still forms part of an important public history. 



West 1st and Diagonal Street. 

Going to a&nbsp;Mexican American&nbsp;Softball Tournament in Newton&nbsp;is an interesting experience. The combination of traditional Mexican and North American cultures blend together in neighborhoods like Newton.&nbsp;The smell of tacos combined with baseball and&nbsp;softball scenery could be considered an oxymoron for many around the United States but in Newton they are considered interdependent forms of cultural expression.&nbsp;<br><br>The Mexican American Softball Tournament is always packed with people from all over Kansas bringing together different communities that consider these tournaments part of their culture.&nbsp;<div><br></div>

English/Spanish. This vast park was established in 1897 and spans 39.12 acres. The park’s many amenities and open spaces make it a great location for community events. This park has been an essential location for the Mexican American community in Newton. 

The Men's fastpitch softball tournament takes place in Athletic Park which consist of hundreds of people eager to eat Mexican American food, watch the softball tournaments, and enjoy the cultural events taking place that day. This park is an essential location for the Mexican American community.

Este parque vasto fue establecido en el 1897 y se extiende a 39.12 hectáreas. Las comodidades y espacios abiertos del parque lo hace un lugar idóneo para eventos comunitarios.  Este parque ha sido una ubicación esencial para la comunidad méxico-americana en Newton. 

Los torneos de softbol de lanzamientos rápidos de hombres se llevan a cabo en el Parque Atlético lo cual consiste de cientas de personas ansiosas por comer comida méxico-americana, ver los torneos de lanzamientos rápidos y disfrutar de los eventos culturales que se llevan a cabo durante ese día. Este parque es una localización esencial para la comunidad Mexicano americana en Newton.

This Facebook post by the Laguna Market site written on December 22, 2017 exemplifies the importance of the market and food for the preservation of Mexican culture in Newton. This mini supermarket and restaurant stands out from the rest of the town by providing Mexican products such as candy, fruits, vegetables and fiesta decorations. There is also a restaurant in the back that provides an exquisite menu including but not limited to: tacos, tortas and burritos which can be done in several ways such as asada, al pastor, carnitas, barbacoa, buche, tripas, rojo, chicharron, deshebrada. The restaurant is also famous for its barbacoa, chicharrón, menudo and tamales. Although there other markets in Newton, none can provide a microcosm of Mexico such as La Laguna Market.

Este anuncio a través de la página de Facebook de la Laguna Market escrito el 22 de diciembre del 2017 ejemplifica la importancia de este mercado para la preservación de la cultura mexicana en Newton. Este pequeño supermercado y restaurante se distingue del resto del pueblo con proveer productos mexicanos tal como dulces, frutas, vegetales y decoraciones de fiestas. También hay un restaurante en la parte trasera del supermercado que provee un menú exquisito incluyendo, pero que no se limita a:  tacos, tortas, y burritos los cuales se pueden preparar de varias maneras tal como de carne asada, al pastor, carnitas, barbacoa, buche, tripas, rojo, chicharrón o deshebrada. Este restaurante es famoso por su barbacoa, chicharrón, menudo y tamales. Aunque existen otros supermercados en Newton, ninguna puede proveer un microcosmo de México como lo hace La Laguna Market.
