This building was the last identifiable location of several million dollars of Confederate gold that was evacuated from New Orleans in 1862. After the gold left this building, it became a mystery as to it's end, and there are a multitude of theories. The gold is now generally referred to as the "Lost Confederate Gold." This building appeared on the front of some Confederate currency in 1862.
