Absecon Lighthouse and Lighthouse Keeper's Museum

Absecon Lighthouse is the nation's third tallest lighthouse. It was first lit in 1857 and was in active service until 1933. The historic site covers two acres and features the original lighthouse tower and a museum in the lighthouse keeper's home. The tower rises 171 feet and visitors can climb each of its 228 steps. In addition to one of the best views in the city, the top of the tower houses the original first-order Fresnel lens that focused the kerosene light and allowed it to reach passing ships up to 20 miles away.

The Ritz Carlton, 1921-1969

When it opened on June 21, 1921, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel was the tallest building in Atlantic City. Every detail of the structure exuded wealth and status, from the faucets for fresh or salt water in every guest room to the private elevators for beachgoers to the grand staircase and elegant ballroom. The hotel experienced a sharp decline during the Great Depression and filed for bankruptcy in 1937. The hotel resumed operations shortly thereafter, buoyed by the end of the Depression and a contract to house troops during World War II. The hotel experienced a second boom period following the postwar prosperity. The hotel again struggled during the 1960s as guests opted for some of the newer resort and casinos. In 1969, the hotel converted to condominiums.

Atlantic County Historical Society Museum and Archive

Atlantic County Historical Society was organized in 1913. The society operates a museum and local history research library. The society holds over 20,000 items in its collections and provides guided tours of its galleries and exhibits which tell the history of Atlantic County and southern New Jersey. The museum occupies the lower level of the building as well as much of the second floor auditorium. Allow at least one hour to tour the museum facilities at a leisurely pace. Volunteers lead guided tours on request and admission to the museum is free.

Brigantine Historical Society and Museum

The Brigantine Beach Historical museum opened in 1992. Operated by the Brigantine Historical Society, the museum helps to preserve the Island’s past. Exhibits include a large collection of photographs from the 19th and early 20th centuries as well as many artifacts.

Casto House and Northfield Museum

This local history museum maintains a collection of early photographs and memorabilia from Northfield and Southern New Jersey.

Goshen Courthouse

Built in 1841, this building served as Orange County's courthouse until 1970. The building was on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Arden

Railroad magnate Edward Henry Harriman built this mansion in 1909. It was deeded to Columbia University but is now owned by the Research Center on Natural Conservation, a nonprofit that studies conservation of natural resources and the effects of global warming.

Brotherhood Winery

The oldest continuously-operated winery in the United States, Brotherhood Winery dates back to 1839 when John Jaques produced and sold wine at this location. The winery remained active during Prohibition, producing sacramental wine for area churches-an activity that remained legal. The winery offers tours of its historic underground cellars as well as various events and wine tasting.

First Congregational Church of Middletown

First Congregational Church of Middletown was established was established in 1785. The church is the congregation's third building, and was completed in 1872.

Bank of Gowanda and Persia Town Hall

Designed by architect Edvard Moeller, this five-sided Neoclassical bank was completed in 1914. The interior features a mural painted by artist Louis Grell (1887-1860), whose paintings can be seen in many other historical buildings around the country. The building served as the headquarters of the Bank of Gowanda for many years before becoming the home of Marine Midland Bank. In 1966, the building began its new life as a civic building and city hall when Marine Midland donated it to the city. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
