Clio is an educational website and mobile application that guides the public to thousands of historical and cultural sites throughout the United States along with nature trails, art walking tours, and virtual tours of museums and sites. Built by scholars for public benefit, each entry includes a concise summary and useful information about a historical site, museum, monument, landmark, or other site of cultural or historical significance. In addition, “time capsule” entries allow users to learn about historical events that occurred around them. Each entry offers turn-by-turn directions and links to relevant books, articles, videos, primary sources, and credible websites.

Clio offers a compelling intellectual challenge as professional historians work with local history experts to create and vet entries in an open digital environment. Ambitious in scope, Clio allows scholars and their students to publish humanities scholarship using an innovative digital format that will instantly reach a broad audience. We believe that there is something powerful that occurs when our sense of the past connects with our sense of place. We hope that you will use Clio to connect with the history and culture that surrounds you.
This website has all of the information one needs to start creating entries for their historical society, museum, library, or other organization- simply click "Instructional Guides" to view videos and other guides and click the "login/sign up" button in the top right corner of the website to start.
Clio is sustained by donations, including funds from speaking engagements and consulting. Our founder, Dr. David Trowbridge, uses all funds from his talks and consulting work to sustain Clio so it stays free for everyone to use. For those looking for something beyond the guides and videos, Trowbridge offers paid consultation, offering help with topics from applying for grants to using Clio and other digital tools, along with creating and editing videos and podcasts. One-on-one consulting appointments are available for $30 for a half-hour or $50 for a full hour.

As a nonprofit, Clio depends upon the generosity of its supporters. There are lots of ways that you can help us connect more people to history and culture:
Consider making a donation. Donations provide stipends for editors and support improvements to the content and functionality of our website and mobile application.
Work with your local historical society or other organization to create and improve Clio entries. Clio will always be free, and all entries are published under a Creative Commons license that acknowledges the contributor.
Work with students to create Clio entries. Clio offers free accounts for institutions and instructors that make it easy to review and publish draft entries from your students.
