The majority of today's Hughesville population is too young to remember the town at the turn of the century. We're going to look back and get a pictorial glimpse of life as it was.
We'll start by walking up and down Main Street which is the business district. North Main and South Main are divided by Water Street and it is within two blocks each way that our tour focuses. We'll also wander a little bit one block or another. This is not a walking tour so the photos will not be in any particular order.
Churches were and still are a center of strong spiritual belief in the area. In these photos we'll be showing Lutheran, EUB, Methodist Baptist and the Friends Church. All buildings remain standing today and one of the, the original Lutheran Church which was in use from 1850-1859 now houses our Historical Society.
Hughesville was once the home of the Williamsport & North Branch Railroad thus resulting in the building of several hotels to house travelers. The Rohrhirsch,, American and Eagle Hotels flourished until WWII and then like the railroad ceased their operations.Passengers departing the train rode by hose and carriage to their hotel.
