Crabtree Field is named in honor of Nelsonville great, Estel Crabtree. Crabtree spent time with the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals. During 1929, 1931-1932 season, and the 1943-1944 season, Crabtree played for the Cincinnati Reds. During the 1933 and the 1941-1942 seasons, Crabtree played for the Reds rival, St. Louis Cardinals. Amazingly, at the age of 37, Crabtree returned to the Major Leagues for the Cardinals in 1941, and in 167 at-bats, Crabtree had 57 hits, 5 home runs, 27 RBIs, 6 doubles, 3 triples, and he drew 26 walks. Crabtree hit a blistering .341, with a .439 on-base percentage, and finished 32nd in the National League MVP voting. "Crabby" as he was known, retired after the 1944 season, and returned to Nelsonville starting the Nelsonville Little League in addition, Crabtree was the founder of the Nelsonville Old Timers Baseball Day and was active in the Nelsonville Band Boosters.
