1. Sanders Kitchen (Reconstructed 1995)

Reconstructed in 1995, the Sanders Kitchen is based on a similar structure seen in pictures of the property in 1907. Separate from the main house, the kitchen would have been the residence for the slaves owned by Simon T. Sanders. They would have lived and worked out of the building. 2. Sanders Barn (Reconstructed 1995)

This recreation is based on a similar structure seen in photographs of the Sanders House property in 1907. Part of an urban farmstead, the current barn currently houses the park's surrey as well as other implements used in the raising of horses for Historic Washington State Park. The Sanders family would've used it for the same purposes, with horses kept in the small pasture right next to it.

Description

This Greek Revival house is decorated to represent the period just before the Civil War. It was the home of Simon T. Sanders, who served as County Clerk of Hempstead County for thirty years from 1838-1868. The house is surrounded by an urban farmstead, as seen with a kitchen in back, grape vines in front, a barn, and space for horses and poultry. Guided tours are available of the building.
