Rufus Porter was the founder of the Scientific American magazine in 1845, as well as an artist and general Renaissance man. He was raised in the Bridgton area and is most famous for designing the revolving cylinder used in rifles. Porter sold his design to Samuel Colt who used the invention to become one of the most influential producers of weaponry. The museum opened in 2005 and maintains a collection related to Porter as well as other collections related to the history of Bridgton and Maine.
