Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
This historical marker next to the county courthouse in Carthage shares information about Abraham Lincoln's involvement in agriculture in Carthage. Agriculture dominated the economic and cultural history of communities throughout Hancock County in the mid-19th century, and Abraham Lincoln's experiences in his early years were also centered on farming as the boy helped his father on their farm. Once he was on his own, Lincoln would not return to farming yet he became more appreciative of the scientific aspects of breeding crops and animals. In Hancock County, Lincoln's uncle and cousins were farmers located near Fountain Green. As a local and state political leader, Lincoln was a supporter of the agricultural college system.
