This location was once the site of the large streetcar terminal station which provided covered loading and unloading for riders in and out of Downtown. It converted to surface parking in the 1940s and a parking structure in 1954. The parking garage was demolished in 1975 as part of the clearance of the superblock for the Galleria shopping complex.

Even before the advent of urban renewal, the post-war era saw a number of Downtown buildings razed to provide surface parking lots as the city and nation transitioned to automobile-oriented suburban life. In many cases these surface lots were cash cows for absentee owners; with no structures on the property their tax bills were reduced and they could simply collect cash for parking as opposed to dealing with multiple tenants and collecting rent. The Carport, Inc. structure was the exception more than the rule Downtown.

The parking garage was demolished in 1975 as part of the clearance of the superblock for the Galleria shopping complex.
