Description

The recorded history of Cumberland Island spans the 1560s to the present. Before that, natives lived here for thousands of years. Spain initially occupied the island starting in the 1560s. In the 1730s, the English colony of Georgia was established. As part of the U.S. state of Georgia, it was occupied by plantation owners, including heirs and descendants of Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. Most of the island became the property of the Carnegie family in the late 1800s and the early and mid 1900s. The Cumberland Island National Seashore was created in 1972.
