303c State Street

State street was the main street in the city of Albany, NY for more than 300 years. The 300 block of State street, where 303c State street is located, is bordered by Henry Johnson Boulevard to the West and Dove Street to the East. This area incorporates the eastern most edge of the historic Washington Park, and features buildings constructed during the later half of the 19th century. Some of the neighboring buildings, including 311 State Street and 306 State street were built in circa 1890 and 1875, respectively. According to CRIS, New York State’s Cultural Resource Information System, 303c State Street is located in the Center Square & Hudson Park Historic District. 

303 State Street, the neighboring building, was built circa 1850, according to tax records sourced on the realtor website Trulia. Limited information can be found in the Building-Structure Inventory Forms from the Division of Historic Preservation in New York State's Parks and Recreation Department records. Both 303 and 303c State Street were assessed on November 30th, 1976, by a representative from the Bureau of Cultural Affairs of Albany, N.Y. Each location was noted as residential, and densely built-up amongst surrounding structures. Structures close to 303c State Street were built around the same estimated time frame: 306 State Street was constructed in 1875, while 311 State Street was built later on in the 1890s. 298 State Street was built circa 1873. Despite the decades separating the time of construction in the 300 block of state street, the buildings look similar in regards to architectural style. 

Many of the buildings located in the 300 block of State Street are brick row-houses, built during the mid-to-late 19th century. The brick or brownstone buildings demonstrate a variety of architectural styles that were popular during the Victorian Era in the United States. Notably, the Victorian Era was marked by a transition from Georgian Architecture, which emphasized simplicity in balance and symmetry. 303c State Street was a carriage house, constructed of red brick and demonstrates the Federalist style, a uniquely American style that was used in the beginning of the United States.
