The name of the park came from the artillery batteries that were built in the 17th century. The Battery was known as the landing point for immigrants arriving to the city from all over the world until 1890, when the Castle Clinton immigration center replaced it.

The park contains attractions such as an old fort named Castle Clinton and the SeaGlass Carousel. Ferries dock at its shore to pick up visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and all summer long concerts play on its grounds.

The park has a beautiful waterfront and big spaces with flower gardens, which makes it a lovely area to see. The park’s location is at the southern tip of Manhattan making it a starting point for walking tours through the city. This stop of the tour is a great introduction to the history of Manhattan, before going into the 9/11 Memorial and One World Trade Center, located only at a 13 minute walk from the park.
