"A Quaker, he is considered America's first important novelist. His Gothic fiction depicts Philadelphia life and inspired Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. As an author, editor, and historian, he addressed women's rights, slavery, and political issues. Born nearby."
