43 N. 6th Avenue (formerly Sherman Street), J. Ashby, G. A. R. This labeled sidewalk stone in front of the Ashby home represents the pride of Joel Ashby in his Civil War service, and his later membership in the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization of veterans of the Union who had served in the Civil War. He had enlisted as a member of Company E, 14th Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 17th Corps of the U.S. Army. The photo below of Joel and Minnie Ashby was taken on July 4, 1917, their 50th wedding anniversary, when they were remarried by Judge Dehos in Sturgeon Bay.
