This building created in 19139 in a Beaux-arts style was originally built for chemistry classes. The building honors William Alphonso Withers the very first chemist that was appointed to NC State University at its founding in 1889. Mr. Withers eventually served as vice president of the university and was also chairman of the local board of education.

This walking tour includes 20 sites on North Carolina State University's main/older campus along Hillsborough Street starting with the Gregg Museum of Art and Design, moving west to the Bell Tower and oldest campus buildings, stopping at the Court of Carolinas, before proceeding to the campus Brickyard, main library, and further classroom buildings. The entries in this tour were researched and curated by Triangle-area teachers participating in a summer '19 professional development program on the topic of "culture and technology" in which they learned to use different technology tools to connect with and reflect on culture. Teachers selected and researched a given building with individual entries combined into this tour that can be taken virtually online or by walking on site.

&nbsp;The Gregg has an interesting history. &nbsp;It evolved from just a collection into a museum. In the 1960’s, NC State started the collection as part of the school of design. &nbsp;Eventually, in 1992, the collection was moved to an addition to the university student center and stayed there until 2013. It was housed in a temporary location until the current museum was opened in 2017. The museum is named for John and Nancy Gregg who not only supported the museum but also donated their vast collection of American Indian art to it.&nbsp;Like many museums, The Gregg presents programs which are free and open to the public. It also offers class visits, internships and workshops. Additionally, the space can be rented for functions when the museum is not open.<div> </div>

 The Gregg Museum of Art & Design owns more than 35,000 objects including textiles, paintings, photographs, furniture, ceramics, and sculpture.  The museum, a part of North Carolina State University, is comprised of a 1928 Georgian mansion, attached to a modern lobby and galleries with outdoor spaces, including a tranquil garden.  The mansion was once the chancellor’s residence. Although the museum has a vast collection, the museum does not have it on permanent display. Instead, items are displayed as part of various exhibitions and are used for research and curricular purposes. Since the exhibitions change, no two visits are necessarily the same.  Adding to its appeal is the fact that it is free and even offers some free parking.


Gregg Museum of Art and Design

The tower is symbolic of key moments in early 20th century America, with work halted on its construction during the great depression and World War II. The Works Progress Administration supported completion of the tower's stonework in 1937. A memorial plaque inside the tower contains 35 names of students/alumni killed in World War II. One name was printed in error, and later altered to represent other anonymous war dead. The bell tower is the site to numerous campus occasions annually including an ROTC commissioning ceremony, and the popular Krispy Kreme Challenge (run for charity). At present, "chimes" in the tower are inauthentic and broadcast by speaker, but major donations have paved the way to install real bells in the near future.

The original concept of the Bell Tower was to be a memorial for NC State Alumni killed in WW I. Vance Sykes, a 1907 alumni of NC State formed a committee to create the monument in 1920. The building began in 1921 and was completed in 1937. The clock was added in 1938 and floodlights in 1939. Other additions include the chimes, shrine room and memorial plaque. The tower was formally dedicated in a ceremony on November 11, 1949.

Primrose Hall has had many purposes since its establishment in 1896. The building was the home of the School of Agriculture, a warehouse, student supplies store, the military department headquarters, offices for student publication, and a geology department space. The building was named after William Stuart Primrose to honor a loyal supporter of the university.

The 37th United States Congress voted and passed the Morrill Land Grant act. This act established colleges that focused on &nbsp;Agricultural and Mechanical arts. The act permitted the sale of federal land, 30,000 acres, and the proceeds were used to establish colleges that taught agricultural,military tactic,mechanic arts. President Abraham Lincoln signed the &nbsp;act in 1862 and it became law. The act was extended in 1862 to the Confederate states. North Carolina State started construction of it’s campus in 1888 and laid the first cornerstone of the Main Building. The building was constructed using bricks that were manufactured at the state prison. In addition prisoners built the structure that would house The building burnt down in 1895 , and was then rebuilt. Originally the building did not have electricity or running water. There were 3 floors. The basement with a kitchen, gym, and lab space.The first floor had a &nbsp;library,classrooms, offices.The second and third floor were used for rooms for the student's. In 1915 the building was named after the first president of the college Alexander Quarles Hollady. Mr Hollady was &nbsp;applying as an english teacher and was offered the position of presidency of the school. He remained as the president for 10 years. During that time an additional eleven buildings were constructed including dormitories , engineering and agricultural buildings.

Holladay Hall is the first building on North Carolina campus and was used for classes,labs, library, offices, gym, dormitories. It was named Holladay Hall after the first president of North Carolina State University. Today the building is the Chancellors office. It's located across from the Bell tower on campus.

One of the first buildings on the NCSU campus, Winslow Hall originally served as an infirmary until 1959. It was then named Alumni Memorial Building in honor of student alumni who died while serving their country in World War II and the Korean War.

In 2006, the building was renamed Winslow Hall in honor of one of the three charter members of the Watauga Club, Arthur Winslow. This club successfully petitioned the North Carolina state legislature to approve what subsequently became North Carolina State University. 

Arthur Winslow graduated from MIT who worked as a "surveyor in eastern North Carolina." He chaired the committee looking into the possibility of creating a North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.  

He took this recommendation to the legislature and also circulated a pamphlet titled "The Need of an Industrial School in North Carolina, together with the Estimates of the Cost of Establishing and Maintaining It. A Memorial to the General Assembly by the Watauga Club of Raleigh", to legislators, important community members, and local new outlets.  

The building was constructed from funds given by alumnus Dick Reynolds, the son of R.J. Reynolds, a prominent tobacco producer from Winston Salem.






Winslow Hall

The structure was&nbsp;rebuilt from the original building which was destroyed by fire over Thanksgiving Weekend in 1901.&nbsp; The hall was named in honor of a young professional society, the Watauga Club.&nbsp; During its early history, the building was site of many pranks resulting from an ongoing rivalry between the Engineering and Agriculture students, including letting loose a mule inside the building.&nbsp;&nbsp;The name was also chosen because at the time, the name had no particular connotation or association to the public, although in more recent years the word "Watauga" has come to be associated with an exploring, pioneering spirit.

A five-story structure currently serving as a residence hall on the campus of NC State University.  It has also housed administrative departments, such as personnel, information services, and campus planning.  The original building was constructed in 1893, but was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1903.  It is named for the "Watauga Club," which was comprised of Raleigh-area men who encouraged the opening of a state college to teach the practical applications of science and industrial education.

Leazar Hall was built in 1912 and is located in North Carolina State University.  It was a campus dining hall seating 750 students until 1971 and now a part of the College of Design. Leazar Hall was named after Augustus Leazar (1843-1905) who was a member of North Carolina House of representatives to establish North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, that now called North Carolina State University, with Charles W. Dabney in 1885.  The bill to establish the school was passed in 1887. 

Augustus was a graduate of Davidson College and fought in the Civil War. He became an educator and newspaper publisher afterward . He was also a politician supporting educational environment improvement.  As a head of legislative committee of education, he fought for appropriation for the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

The building was renovated in 1983 and 2006. 

Leazar Hall

The School of Design became well-known nationwide for its quality of programs, faculty and students under Henry L. Kamphoefner's leadership.&nbsp; He was most well known for bringing modern architecture to the southern United States and in particular North Carolina. Henry was awarded the North Carolina Medal in 1978 and the Topaz Medallion for Lifelong Achievement in Architecture by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture in 1977. Faculty members voted to name the design building after him in 1989.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kamphoefner Hall was built in 1978 and is located on NC State's North Campus. This building is 39,134 square feet and houses the College of Design at NC State. Kamphoefner Hall was named after Henry L. Kamphoefner who was NC State's first dean of the School of Design in 1948.

NC State’s SAS building was completed in 2009 and features 119,000 square feet of classrooms, computer labs, tutorial centers and study space for students and faculty in the mathematics and statistics departments. One of the most useful rooms in the building is the Mathematics Multimedia Center, which features Apple desktop computers, all with the necessary software to complete digital math and statistics assignments, such as Webassign and Matlab. The room also features work tables and is staffed with free tutors on Monday through Thursday from 9am to 5pm and Friday from 9am to 4pm, on a first-come, first-served basis. (1)The building cost 32 billion dollars to construct and was funded through the Higher Education Bond Referendum and gifts from private donors, including the building’s namesake, SAS Institute, a worldwide software company based in Cary, NC. (2) SAS Institute has a deep connection with NC State because the company’s CEO, Jim Goodnight, formed an early version of SAS software while a PhD student at NC State. Later, he and other NC State faculty left the university to create what today is a mega-software company. As of July 13, 2019, Dr. Goodnight has a net worth of 9.7 billion dollars. (3)Located at 2311 Stinson Drive, the SAS building sits on ground that used to be Riddick Stadium. Riddick served as the football stadium at NC State between 1907 and 1968. The stadium was named after Wallace Carl Riddick, who coached the NC State football team during the 1898 and 1899 seasons. Riddick was torn down and the space was used as a parking lot and eventually the plot for SAS in 2009. (4)<div> </div>

A relatively new building on NC State University’s campus, SAS was built in 2009. Constructed on the site of the former Riddick Football Stadium, the SAS was designed for the faculty and students within the mathematics and statistics departments. Complete with technologically advanced computer labs, classrooms, meeting spaces, and offices, the building is a true treasure for NC State University.

Born in Raleigh,&nbsp;Professor Park started as a machinist for the Seaboard Air Line Railway before serving as a professor from 1890-1934 and a forge shop instructor from 1890-92. He also later held leadership positions such as the superintendent of the Mechanical Engineering Department shops and the Heat, Light and Power Plant. Additionally, he&nbsp;played an integral role in Raleigh's&nbsp;city planning by acting as chairman of the first City Planning Commission and participating in naming many of&nbsp;Raleigh's streets.

Named for Charles B. Park and built in 1914, the Park Shops is where classes such as Woodworking, Machinery, and Welding were taught from 1914-1949. The building has been extensively renovated and currently holds several light-filled atriums and exposed-brick lecture halls along with a video studio for the campus Distance Education office and a popular coffee shop.

The building is named after&nbsp;Clarence Hamilton Poe (1881-1964)&nbsp;who served the state of North Carolina in several capacities.&nbsp; As a proponent for&nbsp;agriculture and education, Poe worked to&nbsp; was a member of the State Board of Agriculture and a leader in education, forestry, medical care, health, and social welfare. Poe was self-educated but later received five honorary degrees and countless other awards, including the World Peace Medal of the American Freedom Association.

This 1971 concrete and stone-paneled building located on NC State's north campus was named in honor of Clarence Hamilton Poe (1881-1964) who was a leader in education, forestry, medical care, health, and social welfare. The building currently houses the School of Education (floors 1-6) and the Department of Psychology (floor 7). It is known as an example of "brutalist" architecture that clashes with neighboring brick buildings. Poe Hall is located at  2310 Katharine Stinson Dr adjoining one of the open green spaces on the NCSU campus.

<div>Originally built as the mechanical engineering department in 1922, this four-story building was named for Walter Hines Page (1855-1918). Mr. Page was a native of Cary, NC and was a founding father of NCSU. His father was Allison Francis Page who established the towns of Cary and Aberdeen.&nbsp;</div><div> </div><div>Mr. Page's was highly regarded. He was editor of The State Chronicle. Here he expressed his support for industrial education, small farming, and the development of public schools. Mr. Page spent 20 years as editor of the Forum, World's Work and Atlantic Monthly, after he moved to New York and London. He also worked for the publishers Houghton Mifflin and started his own company, Doubleday, Page and Company. From 1913 - 1918, he served as ambassador to Great Britain.</div><div> </div>

Page Hall is a university building completed in 1922 that sits on the Court of North Carolina. It originally housed the Mechanical Engineering Department of the College of Engineering which has since moved to the newer Centennial Campus. The building still houses Engineering administration and development offices.

The Court of North Carolina, informally known as Court of Carolinas to the NC State students, is a large quad located on North Campus of NC State University. It is west of the historic Belltower and directly east of the iconic 1911 building. The quad is surrounded by the 1911 Building Hall, Tompkins Hall, Caldwell Hall, Winston Hall, Poe Hall, Page Hall, and Leazar Hall. The Court of North Carolina quad was dedicated on September 3, 1986 and was previously used as a cow pasture and later as the site of the Quonset Huts. The Quonset Huts were built in 1946 to help accommodate the influx of students entering after World War II on the GI Bill. Legend has it that planted within the Court were trees to represent each of North Carolina's 100 counties, but there is no evidence that was ever the case. In present day, it is often used as a green area for students to sit and study, picnic, and take formal pictures on the grand brick staircase that leads up to the 1911 building.

The 1911 Building at NC State University is the home the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, where sociologists like Sarah Bowen, Martha Crowley and Toby Parcel serve as faculty. Previously, the building served as home to the Office of Global Engagement, the "umbrella organization" for initiatives that connected NC State's students, faculty and staff with programs and universities around the world.

The building itself has a storied history. According to NCSU's website, it was named after the Class of 1911, because of their dramatic efforts to stop hazing, or what was known in more genteel times as "rough discipline". The freshmen led a massive schoolyard brawl in response to ongoing hazing, and as a result, the hazing stopped for a number of years. Today, the building is perhaps more famous among students for being the only building at NC State that carries Pepsi products, although this may be changing.

1911 Building

Even though this building was constructed for the Electrical Engineering and Physics Departments, Daniels Hall was named after a local journalist. Josephus Daniels was editor of the Raleigh News and Observer and a fierce critic of the local government at the time. For sixteen years, Daniels was a member of the Board of Trustees at North Carolina State University. While not at North Carolina State University, Daniels was the secretary of the Navy during World War 1 and later named ambassador to Mexico. Two years after its construction, a new wing was added. The East Wing was added for an Engineering Experimentation Station. Due to the expansion of the Experimentation Station, this program moved out in 1946. A West Wing was added in 1953. The Computer Science Department decided to occupy the building fourteen years later and one third of the building is currently used by this department.The remaining space is used for labs and physics&nbsp;classes today.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Daniels Hall is located on North Campus at North Carolina State University. Previously home to Career Planning, Placement Center and International Travel, this building is now used for research in plasma physics, wave transmissions, aeronomy and laser studies. Daniels Hall was built in 1926. This building was once named the Civil Engineering Building and then Mann Hall before coming to be known as Daniels Hall.

Currently, Cox Hall is a six-story class building on North Carolina State University's campus, housing classrooms, computer rooms and labs. It was built in 1960, a year after the college received a university title and the campus was experiencing a growth of incoming students. It was named as an honor to Gertrude Mary Cox, a statistician and the first woman to be Full Professor and Department Head at NC State University.&nbsp; Gertrude Mary Cox lived from January 13, 1900 - October 17, 1978. She was born in Iowa on January 13, 1900&nbsp;and lived there&nbsp; for her entire childhood and college education, until leaving to attend graduate studies in Berkeley, California. After graduate school, she moved back to Iowa, where she became the head of the Statistical Laboratory at Iowa State. &nbsp;Seven years later, she was offered a position at NC State University, where she remained for the rest of her career. Even after she retired from her Professorship, Cox continued to research, publish and teach, doing numerous consulting jobs around the world, such as Egypt and Thailand,&nbsp; and even contributed to the start of RTI in the late 1950s.&nbsp; Throughout her career, Cox was recognized for her work, including&nbsp;the International Award for Distinguished Service to Agriculture by Gamma Sigma Delta in 1960 and given Honorary Life Membership of the Biometric Society in 1964. In 1975, she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.&nbsp;

A general laboratory building on NC State Campus, built in 1960 with six floors of labs, computer rooms and classrooms. Honors Gertrude Mary Cox, a statistician and the first woman to be Full Professor and Department Head at NC State University.

Cox Hall

One of two main libraries on the NC State Campus, DH Hill Library houses over 1 million volumes of the Libraries' collection and offers a variety of popular spaces and technologies for both individual and group work and study. These spaces include Learning Commons, Special Collections Reading Room, Quiet Reading Room, Makerspace, Digital Media Lab, and Virtual Reality Studio. You can also stop by The Creamery or the Hill of Beans coffee bar for a snack or drink. 

DH Hill Library

The Brickyard, officially named "University Plaza", is one of North Carolina State University's nine Hallowed Spaces.  The plaza was designed by NCSU's alumn, Richard C. Bell, and construction began in 1966.  On March 7, 1968, on the 81st Founder's Day of the school, the space was formally dedicated.  The Brickyard is a space for students and staff to congregate for a variety of purposes.

Named after Carey Hoyt Bostian, elected NC State chancellor in 1953, Bostian Hall is the home of most of the Biological Sciences studied at NCSU. After six years, Dr. Bostian resigned from his chancellor position to return to teaching genetics and direct what later became the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Located in between the lovely Governors Scott Courtyard and The Brickyard on North Campus near Hillsborough Street, Bostian Hall was erected in 1979. The historical photo below is from the NCSU Libraries collection documenting the building not long after it was built. Tips for visitors: Many of the rooms in Bostian Hall are laboratories, where no food or drink is allowed. Eat before you stop in!&nbsp;&nbsp;It is also attached to the adjacent Gardner Hall, which can be confusing for visitors and students alike.

Home of the College of Natural Resources, Bostian Hall could also be known as, "Biology Hall," since the three-story building houses classrooms for botany, entomology, microbiology, and zoology.
